Biography: Mr. Donald L. Hermance is a retired music educator with a BA degree from Duke University and a Master of Music degree from Boston University, having taught for two years at East Greenwich, RI, five years at Arlington, MA, and 25 years at Scituate, MA, serving there as a teacher of general music, music theory, music composition and also as director for many choral organizations, concert band, marching band and jazz band. He was also the Curriculum Coordinator and Department Chairman in the Scituate public schools. He was twice guest choral conductor for the Southeastern Massachusetts School Bandmasters Association, and the Cape Cod Music Festival Chorus. He has been a vocal adjudicator for many years for the Massachusetts Music Educators Association All-state and Southeastern District Festivals, the New Hampshire All-state music festival, and the SEMSBA festival. He was also the chorus manager and president of the New England Music Festival Association, and chorus manager for the Massachusetts All-state, district and regional festivals.
Mr. Hermance was director of the Senior Choir at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church of Scituate for over 30 years, and the youth choir there for many years. He was also the founding director of the Scituate Music Guild chorus, and an adult jazz vocal ensemble “Mixed Company.” He has written and directed many choral compositions and about twenty original musical productions, and was a trombonist in a local jazz ensemble. He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the New England Music Festival Association, and the Lowell Mason Award by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association.
